After years of Intel’s dominance in the mobile processor segment, healthy competition has returned to the market. AMD has released an impressive 4,000 series of chips, and laptop manufacturers have already unveiled novelties in the promising iron. What came out of this situation? We check with the help of the gaming laptop Acer Nitro 5.
Acer Nitro 5 – no-frills game models
Gaming laptops from Acer are divided into several lines. The Nitro series includes powerful but relatively affordable devices. Usually they use medium-segment components and practical materials, which provide a moderate cost. At the same time, these laptops, compared with traditional home models, are distinguished by purely gamer characteristics. For example, the layout, individual design elements and pre-installed utilities.
For games and more
Acer Nitro 5-a balanced solution, which has found a place for modern components. The novelty provides decent performance in both games and specialized working utilities, not to mention everyday use at home. Despite the large 15.6-inch display, the laptop does not look bulky: the moderate thickness of the body and small-screen glasses affect.
The model that came to our review received a promising configuration-an AMD Ryzen 7 4800h processor with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti video accelerator equipped with 4 GB of GDDR6 memory. The type of RAM DDR4-3200 is presented in 16 GB and works in dual-channel mode. The processor installed on the laptop is distinguished by the presence of 8 physical cores, which, thanks to support for SMT (simultaneous MultiThreading) technology, process up to 16 data streams.
It is also worth considering the discrepancy of one generation between the lines of desktop and mobile processors from AMD. New versions of Ryzen 4000 Mobile correspond to the desktop chips of the 3000 series, that is, they belong to the Zen 2 architecture and are produced with a 7 nm process. The modification frequencies of 4800H, depending on the load and temperature, range from 2.9 to 4.3 GHz. In addition, Ryzen 7 4800h is equipped with a built-in Radeon Vega 7 chip, which activates in undemanding tasks to save energy. As for the discrete graphics card, it is very familiar to gamers. This is one of the low-end models based on the Turing family, which received 1024 stream processors (or CUDA cores, as NVIDIA calls them), but lacked support for hardware sorting.
Today, gaming laptops look much more inconspicuous than the models of yesteryear. However, in the outlines of the new generation of Acer Nitro 5, the specialization of gamers is undoubtedly guessed. Here, the futuristic curves of the case, the aggressive design of the ventilation holes and the uneven shape of the cover with beveled corners. High-end materials of the laptop can not boast, but there are no complaints about the plastic from which the case is made: the surface has a pleasant texture and is well resistant to prints and divorces. When pressed hard, the area of the cover and keyboard bends slightly, but there is no feeling of fragility or insecurity.
And the suburbs
What else do gaming laptops differ from the rest? The fact that it is almost always necessary to connect several devices to them. Where the desktop needs a sufficient touchpad, the player will need at least one external mouse. And not any, but wired, with a minimum response time. Therefore, a sufficient number of ports and connectors for solutions of this class is not a whim, but a serious necessity.
Acer Nitro 5 offers three standard USB Type-A ports, universal USB Type-C, a full-size HDMI 2.0 video output, a combined audio jack and, of course, a network port for wired Internet. By the way, USB Type-C and one of the USB Type-A support power to charge even when the laptop is turned off. Also note the network card of the Gamer-Killer class e2600. With the utility preinstalled, it allows you to configure traffic priority, giving games and other important tasks an advantage over other processes. But users who are interested in photography and video will have to have an external memory card reader, since there is no built-in card reader in this model.
What’s inside the box
The Acer Nitro 5, as befits the player model, provides the ability to upgrade some components and provides easy access to its internal space. A simple phillips screwdriver is enough to remove the cover. You will only have to play with pins along its perimeter, a selection of plastic or a bank card is useful here. Next, access to a pair of SO-DIMM memory connectors, two M. 2 interfaces for SSD (the free version has the M. 2 2242 format) and a bay for a 2.5-inch hard drive will open. Removing the bottom cover, you can evaluate the design of the cooling system, in its composition: two low-profile fans, flat heat pipes and a pair of radiators.
Good screen and good sound
The laptop was equipped with a 15.6-inch IPS-matrix, a resolution of 1920×1080 and a pixel density of 141 ppi. Among the shortcomings, we highlight only a relatively low brightness. On the other hand, it is enough for the room, and for working on the street, such laptops are rarely used.
Otherwise, the screen leaves exceptionally positive impressions. It is pleased with good viewing angles and high-quality lighting, devoid of strong drops and lights at the edges. And the matte finish reduces the amount of glare on the screen.
The main chip of the Matrix supports the scan frequency of 144 Hz. First of all, it will be appreciated by lovers of online shooters. For the rest of the players, the raised Duke will give a sharper image in scenes saturated with movement.
The sound is responsible for two speakers, which are displayed at the bottom of the box. A successful constructive solution should be called the placement of exit holes in raised beveled areas above the surface on which the laptop is located. Thanks to this, the audio is not muted, even if the device is something soft like a blanket or a sofa cushion. The sound is not distinguished by special bells and whistles, but it is quite clean and has a certain depth. When there are no headphones at hand, the built-in speakers can handle movies and games.
Keyboard and touchpad
The keyboard is one of the elements of the Acer Nitro 5 that distinguishes it from the rest of the models. Immediately draw attention to the red accent in the design of the keys, which becomes even more noticeable when the backlight is on. The intensity of the latter is controlled by the arrows in Fn mode. But the tone in the test instance is only one, although some more expensive versions are equipped with full RGB lighting. Other unusual features: there is a separate button to start the NitroSense application. The utility allows you to adjust various parameters, such as fan speed, as well as monitor the temperature of the processor and discrete graphics card.
The design and layout of the buttons are standard for laptops with a similar form factor. However, the key mechanism itself was not very effective in practice. To activate it, you need to clearly type in the center of the button. This can not always be done the first time you type quickly or participate in a dynamic multiplayer download. The situation is aggravated by the fact that sound pressure and tactile response are still present. Of course, you get used to this feature for a couple of days and less false click is done. But at first this keyboard behavior is annoying.
It performs the task clearly and stably, correctly handling standard Windows taps, taps and gestures. However, it also has no bright features, except for the red line on the perimeter of the touchpad.
Battery and temperature
In addition to good performance, the novelty showed very moderate operating temperatures. At the time of low load, the CPU does not heat up above 36-37 degrees. Fans of the cooling system rotate no faster than 1500 rpm — everything is perceived as a small background hum, which can be distinguished only in complete silence. If the temperature drops to 35 ℃ or less, the CO enters fully passive working mode with zero noise. The maximum heat recorded at the games and landmarks was 83 degrees. But the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti did not warm above 62-63 ℃. These are great numbers for a gamer laptop. It is worth paying tribute to AMD and NVIDIA engineers and designers of the Nitro 5 cooling system.
