I just installed my Ring system today, and overall I am pleased. However, I am concerned about how the products (particularly the motion detectors) stick to the wall. The contact sensors (for doors and windows) and the motion detectors both use an adhesive backing. Make sure you stick it in the correct place the first time!
I cleaned the surfaces (plain white wall) where I planned to attach the devices first. I installed the door sensors without issue. The first motion detector was a painless corner install. The second motion detector install was quite literally painful. I installed it in a corner, and it very quickly detached from the wall and hit the hard floor. The cover popped off and the batteries came out, but it doesn’t seem too damaged on the outside. I’m kind of concerned about the inside, however. The adhesive side landed sticky side up, so thinking maybe it was a fluke, I tried to attach it to the wall again. It seemed to work, but I decided I would move it over on the wall about a foot, so I could attach it using the two fresh/unused flat surface adhesive attachments. (There are four total on the back of the motion detector, only two are used at a time depending on where you choose to install.)
As I was standing on a stool wiping down the wall, the motion detector detached again and slammed into the edge of my knee cap. I held it up into the corner again and looked at the adhesive patches, and it seems one of them wouldn’t align totally flush with the corner. A few hours later, I still have a big red mark that feels like it’s going to develop into a nice bruise.
I really hope the motion detector’s internal mechanisms weren’t affected by the two falls, and I hope the other devices stay put! I want to get some more sensors, but might wait until I see how these hold up. Not sure how else to reattach them if they fall off, except buy new ones or use your own adhesive.
